After a tiring and challenging day, coming home, entering through the door, and suddenly smelling the scent of home is an incredibly comforting feeling. Sometimes all it takes is a deep breath, and our mood instantly changes. We arrive at the island of peace, where everything is pleasantly fragrant, waiting for us with a prepared dinner, followed by a cozy armchair and our favorite book… Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen too often, but let’s admit it, we could get used to it.
The air quality in our home is important not only for our well-being but also for our health. It’s worth ventilating every day for at least 10 minutes, even in cold weather. In addition to fresh air, we can easily create a pleasant scent in our home by using natural air fresheners. Since scents affect our mood and well-being, it’s advisable to surround ourselves with soothing aromas that provide a sense of security. The first impression of guests coming to our home is also influenced by the scent they encounter upon entering.
How to Scent Your Home?
When creating the scent of your home, it’s important for the fragrances in different living spaces to harmonize with each other while allowing everyone to experience the scent that suits their taste and current mood.
Artificial air fresheners and room sprays are available in a wide range, but most of them contain propellants that can be harmful to health with frequent use. One of the safest choices for scenting your home is using natural, 100% essential oils, which can be easily used for aromatization with a diffuser. You can also choose incense sticks, scented candles, or aroma lamps as air fresheners – it’s really a matter of personal preference.
If you prefer using incense sticks, make sure to always get high-quality ones made from herbs and avoid buying the cheapest, low-quality imitations. When it comes to scented candles, opt for soy candles and avoid traditional scented candles that contain paraffin, which releases petroleum byproducts into the air. On the other hand, soy candles are made from soybean oil, making them environmentally friendly and harmless to health.
For an aroma lamp, you can use essential oils or soy wax cubes. The latter releases a pleasant fragrance just like soy candles but is available in smaller packaging. Placing it on top of the aroma lamp and lighting a candle underneath allows the scented wax to slowly evaporate, resulting in a long-lasting scent.
What Fragrance to Choose?
The choice of fragrance primarily depends on the mood and impression you want to achieve. If you’re looking for calming, stress-relieving scents, lavender, chamomile, or eucalyptus are excellent choices.
For a fresh, invigorating scent in your home, citrus fragrances are a great option. Whether it’s grapefruit, lemon, orange, or a combination of these with a hint of delicate floral scents, you can’t go wrong with this choice.
A Tip for Making Air Freshener
Using reed diffusers is quite popular and one of the most long-lasting and straightforward ways to scent your home. It’s become increasingly popular, especially because you can make it yourself and customize the blend of scents according to your preferences. Raw wood or bamboo sticks are excellent at diffusing essential oils, providing a long-lasting scent for your home.
Ingredients for making reed diffusers:
- A decorative bottle with a narrow neck that can hold about 100 ml of liquid
- A base oil of your choice: almond oil, olive oil, grape seed oil
- Essential oil(s) of your choice – it’s important to use 100% pure essential oil
- Reed sticks: 8-10 bamboo skewers
Pour 100 ml of base oil into the glass bottle, then add 20-25 drops of the chosen essential oil. With this blending ratio, you’ll obtain a strong scent, but you can adjust the concentration as desired later on. After adding the ingredients, shake them well and finally place the reed sticks into the bottle. Allow the sticks to soak up the oil and then flip them over. It’s recommended to flip the sticks once a week. You can decorate the bottle according to your preference to match the style of your home.
